Youth Art Month
The Portsmouth Public Library Local History Department will host its annual Youth Art Month exhibit, March 1-31, featuring artwork from nine local school districts.

Now in its 16th year, the exhibit will include both 2D and 3D artwork. Handmade bookmarks created by the students will also be available to Library patrons during the month.

According to the National Art Education Association website, Youth Art Month encourages support for quality school art programs, and promotes art material safety. The program provides a medium for recognizing skills developed through visual arts experiences unlike any other curriculum subjects, including problem solving, creativity, observation, and communication. Art shows, special exhibits, fundraisers, and school and community activities take place annually through the month of March to celebrate K-12 visual art education.

Artwork will be included from Clay, Sciotoville, Minford, New Boston, Northwest, Portsmouth, Valley, West, and Wheelersburg schools. The exhibit is sponsored by The Scioto Foundation and the Portsmouth Rotary Club, and coordinated by Gifted Services Coordinator Sharee Price of the South Central Ohio ESC.

Carolyn Cottrell, Local History Department supervisor, said the library began hosting the exhibit in 2002 and visitors look forward to it every year.

“I just love to show what this area has as far as talent. We have such talented students here,” Cottrell said. “We like to give them the experience that an artist would actually deal with.”
