Gifted student interns with ESC program

Intern Nathan Marcum
Experience is the best education, and college sophomore Nathan Marcum spent five-weeks of the summer interning at the Gifted Service Program at South Central Ohio Educational Service Center, in New Boston, Ohio.

Marcum is majoring in political science at Shawnee State University and the internship was sponsored by The Scioto Foundation.

“I was granted a scholarship by The Scioto Foundation this past year for college, and with that came the opportunity for internship. So I applied, and I got a call from (ESC Gifted Services Coordinator Sharee Price) and she said she’d like to have me as her intern,” Marcum said.

This was not Marcum’s first experience with the ESC’s Gifted Service Program. As a student at Wheelersburg, he participated in ESC-hosted activities such as quiz bowl, music festival, and the summer enrichment program. Now a college student, returning to the program gave him a glimpse of the program from the other side.

“These programs were so transformative for me, so I loved being able to be involved with them again,” he said. “This summer has been all about looking for funding and ways that we can present these opportunities. I’ve helped edit the newsletter and quiz bowl questions and helped choose which questions are viable options.”

While his internship with the ESC has ended, Marcum said he will continue to volunteer on ESC activities. After college, Marcum said he would like to employ his political science degree with the educational experience he’s learned at the ESC to teach English as a foreign language with the Peace Corps.

As his internship came to an end, Marcum praised the opportunity he was given by the ESC and The Scioto Foundation.

“I think it’s great that not only the ESC, but all sorts of non-profit organizations are involved with The Scioto Foundation internship program. I’d highly recommend it to anyone,” he said.

Price also thanked The Scioto Foundation for providing this opportunity to college students, and said it was a great experience having Marcum interning with her this summer.
