More than 100 7th- and 8th Grade students from 11 local Junior High schools participated in the Quiz Bowl Tournament at the South Central Ohio Educational Service Center, in New Boston, on Wednesday, Oct. 31.
Participating schools included Clay, East, Green, Minford, New Boston, Northwest, Notre Dame, Portsmouth, Valley, West, and Wheelersburg.
The Minford Jr. High Team, led by Coach Jill McFadden, won the Championship, with the Runner-Up title going to the Green Jr. High Team, led by Coach Molly Sylvia. The Minford team notably scored 100 total points in their two matches and scored a perfect score in the Alphabet Round in their second match.
“The students have put in so much hard work and dedication to defend the honor of being back-to-back county champions. I could not be more proud of their commitment to their team and school,” McFadden said of her Minford team.
Each team played two matches to determine which two teams would advance to the Championship Round. The matches include questions in six categories including Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Fine Arts and Religion/Mythology. There is also a 12 question Alphabet Round in which all answers begin with the same letter. The matches conclude with a Lightning Round where students buzz in to answer questions from a wide variety of topics.
“It’s always exciting to see how enthusiastic and eager the students are to participate in an event like this. Not only are they learning about a lot of different subjects, but they are learning how to work together as a team and gaining self-confidence as they compete in front of an audience. We always have a great turn out for this event with parents and families cheering their teams on throughout the tournament and it’s wonderful to see the students being recognized for their knowledge and hard work,” said Sharee Price, ESC Gifted Services coordinator and coordinator of the event.
