Ohio’s State Tests 2015-16

A variety of material has been released to help teachers prepare for the upcoming Ohio State Tests developed by the American Institute for Research based on Ohio’s New Learning Standards (which include Common Core for English Language Arts and Math). On this page we have included links to the resources that could prove useful for teachers in tested grades. These resources include test blueprints and performance level descriptors that are essential for guiding instruction.

Continue to check the Ohio Department of Education Learning Standards page (http://education.ohio.gov/Topics/Ohios-Learning-Standards), the State Tests Updates page (http://education.ohio.gov/Topics/Testing/State-Test-Updates-for-2015_2016), and the Ohio State Tests Portal page (http://oh.portal.airast.org/ocba/) for the most recent updates.

Math

K-6 Fluencies (Achieve the Core)
-- Procedural Skill and Fluency: The standards call for speed and accuracy in calculation. Teachers structure classtime and/or homework time for students to practice core functions such as single digit multiplication so that students have access to more complex concepts and procedures.

Critical Areas of Focus (K-8)
-- The critical areas are designed to bring focus to the standards at each grade by describing the big ideas that educators can use to build their curriculum and to guide instruction. The grade-level introductions include at least two and no more than four critical areas for each grade.

Standards Progressions (K-8)
-- The Ohio Department of Education has reformatted the CCSS by domains to show the progression of concepts and skills across the grade levels. This document is not designed to replace the CCSS. Instead, it should serve as a companion document to be used by curriculum leaders and teachers to better understand the CCSS and to analyze where their curriculum fits within the standards progression of learning for their students.

Blueprints (3-8, Algebra I, Geometry, Integrated Math I and II)
-- Test blueprints serve as a guide for test construction and provide an outline of the content and skills to be measured on the test. They contain information about individual tests, including the number of test items, the number of points on the test, and show how the learning standards are grouped in order to report the test results.

Performance Standards
-- This document summarizes the scale score ranges and performance standards of Ohio’s State Tests in English language arts and mathematics.

Performance Level Descriptors
-- The American Institutes for Research (AIR) and the Ohio Department of Education assembled panels of Ohio stakeholders to review actual test questions to define what students should know or be able to do at each performance level.

Focus by Grade Level (Achieve the Core)
-- Grades K–High School: A collection of PDFs detailing the mathematical content emphasized in the Standards by grade level. These can be used as guides to inform instructional decisions regarding time and other resources
